Dancing Matt
I'm totally getting a kick out of this video. (Click the link under the video to watch it in high quality if you've got a decent internet connection; it's fun with much better clarity.) The outtakes are pretty funny, too. | | Saturday, August 11th, 2007 | | 9:04 pm |
Alaska Bear Photos
I realized that I never really spammed this around, so here it is now for anyone who's interested (better late than never and all that): Pictures from our HMC alumni trip to Alaska for bear watching in the Katmai National Forest. Enjoy the slideshow! Bears! | | Monday, September 18th, 2006 | | 8:30 pm |
A Good Day at Work
Today I saw the Foo Fighters, Bob Dylan, the Black-Eyed Peas, and the Eagles in concert. At work. Have I mentioned how much I love my new job??? Current Mood: tired but happy | | Monday, August 21st, 2006 | | 8:48 pm |
A Worker Ant
Today was my first day of work! I am officially gainfully employed! A bit overwhelmed by everything I need to learn, but looking forward to diving in. The corporate-ness of the orientation I had to sit through today was a bit shocking and amusing for one coming from academia; I had to keep from rolling my eyes at some of the videos of people raving about the company's products with schlock-rock in the background. And this is a company known for not being too "corporate"! It really brought home the choice I've made in leaving the academic world. Let's hope I learn to tolerate it rather than be annoyed by it. BTW, I recently sent out an email announcing my new email address, as the old one will be expiring soon. If you didn't receive it, that means I don't have a current address for you. So, if you want to keep in touch, email me soon. | | Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 | | 3:54 pm |
An Update
So, rather a lot has happened in my life as of late, which makes me think it's time to get back on livejournal and sum it all up. A rough timeline of the past couple months: May 19: I defended my thesis, to wild acclaim. (OK, maybe not, but the audience and my committee were both pretty enthusiastic, so.) June 9: I submitted my dissertation, which was written pretty much entirely in the three weeks between my defense and the submission deadline. Woo hoo! June 11: I crash my bike, resulting in substantial trauma to my face and mouth. Damn squirrels. The following week is spent in bed on a liquid diet, as it turns out that not only have I seriously injured myself, but my body is actually rather unhappy with me due to accumulated stress over the past few months. Imagine that. June 18: I drag myself up and stagger through the graduation ceremony so that I can get the actual diploma in my hot little hands, because I've earned it, dammit. No pictures are allowed, as I'm not exactly looking my best. June 19: I get on a plane, and spend the next two weeks in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, because I'd be planning this trip for months, and no stupid accident is going to get in my way! I eat a lot of soup. I play the saxophone in five concerts over two weeks, despite substantial mouth pain. It is totally worth it. July 2: I arrive home, exhausted. July 3: Letdown sets in, as there's nothing I have to keep going for at this point. I promptly get very, very sick. July 7: Still very, very sick, and in fact getting sicker by the day. But I already had to postpone this job interview once (because it was supposed to happen the week of the bike accident, and I couldn't actually speak then), so I power through and do the full 9-5 interview day for Job #1. I'm tired and spacey, but they love me anyway, for some reason. July 10: Still completely sick, dammit. Job #1 calls at 9:30 in the morning (Monday morning, after I interviewed on Friday...who calls someone at 9:30 in the morning?!?) to offer me the position. I don't answer the phone, because it's early, and I am sick, and besides I already know what they're going to say. July 12: More phone interviews with company #2, whom I had visited in person before all this started. Much agonizing over job options. To summarize: Job #1 is low-paying postdoc with a 45-minute commute, doing the most worthwhile and interesting work I can imagine doing, with the best people and facilities that exist. Job #2 is high-paying industry position 5 blocks from home, doing, well, kind of interesting work, maybe, if you like that sort of thing. July 13: What to do, what to do.... July 14: More agonizing. July 15: Realize that I've decided long ago to go with my gut and take the postdoc, and am really just coming to terms with my own decision (and agonizing about giving up my dreams of a high-paying job). Still sick, by the way. And getting sick of it. July 17: Start to feel human again, rather than like a giant snot factory. July 19: Get phone call that official written offer for Job #1 has been FedExed. Tell them I'll take it. They are, in their own words, "ecstatic." I'm pretty happy, too. So, that about sums it up. I'm done with grad school and have a job. But it's a postdoc, not a real job, so I'm not really a grown-up yet, right? Right??? | | Saturday, May 20th, 2006 | | 7:05 pm |

Long Time No Post...
I thought I would share an interview with Daniel Dennett from today's Salon that gave me a huge sense of relief and hope. How refreshing to see/hear someone speak lucidly and intelligently and rationally about the place of science in religion. I think I'll order his book. I also like the coining of the word bright, which I hadn't come across before. I'm a bright. | | Thursday, September 29th, 2005 | | 10:00 pm |

Ah, September...
The new school year is starting back at Mudd. You know how I know? Because I just got the year's first email of...ASHMC meeting minutes! I will never escape them. The minutes will follow me for the rest of my life. | | Thursday, August 18th, 2005 | | 5:23 pm |
Going to the Movies, Old-Style
Had a great movie-going experience last night. There's a restored old theatre near us that shows "classic" films on the big screen, complete with a live organist for entertainment before/between shows. Last night they had a double dose of Audrey Hepburn, whom I love: Charade and Wait Until Dark, neither of which I'd seen in their entirety before. So we headed over to the theatre and settled in for the night (it costs $6 to get in, but you can stay for the double feature if you want to see both movies, which is a pretty good deal). Charade was definitely amusing: a fast-paced, funny, full-of-surprises Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant romp. Quite enjoyable. But then came Wait Until Dark, which turned out to be the vastly superior movie. I won't say too much, for the sake of those of you who haven't seen it (and should). But it's an excellent layered thriller of a movie, and Audrey Hepburn (while not looking as glamorous as in some other films) does some amazing acting. I think it's a comment on the state of movies today that, during the climactic scene of Wait Until Dark, I screamed out loud in the theatre for the first time in my life (along with about 200 other people). They just don't make suspense the way they used to. I couldn't even pinpoint for you exactly why I was so terrified by the time we reached the end of that movie; I've certainly scene plenty of scary modern movies, and I don't usually shriek during them. This film just creeps up on you, developing slowly, without the heavy-handed foreshadowing that's so common in today's films. And by the end, man, they had me completely. I'm also totally stoked because next week for Silent Wednesday night they're showing Nosferatu. I got such a kick out of Shadow of the Vampire, despite never having seen the movie it was riffing on, so I'm very much looking forward to the opportunity to see Nosferatu on the big screen with a live organist providing scary music, the way it was originally intended. | | Monday, August 15th, 2005 | | 12:17 pm |
Had a weekend of wedding-related amusement: saw the movie Wedding Crashers on Saturday, and then went to a wedding on Sunday. Interestingly, there actually were a couple of wedding crashers at the wedding (people who knew the bride a little but hadn't been invited; they'd heard when/where the wedding was from other friends and decided to crash). But they behaved themselves, so no movie-worthy antics. Also, I must continue my campaign to spread this bit of joy to all my acquantainces, so...if you're feeling the need for some good, cathartic laughter, check out these Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974. I know, that doesn't sound very funny. Trust me on this one. Go through all the pages. You will laugh. Really. You don't want to miss this one. | | Wednesday, August 10th, 2005 | | 5:50 pm |

Being made fun of by the Simpsons
In case any of you missed Sunday's episode of The Simpsons, allow me to recap for you: Lisa drags the whole family to an art-house film in Albanian with subtitles. They do not enjoy it. But as they're leaving the theatre, Bart triumphantly holds up a handful of hair and says, "At least I got to cut the ponytail off the grad student sitting in front of me!" He then holds the detached ponytail up to his head and begins to mock: "Ooh, look at me, I'm a grad student, I'm 30 years old, and I only made $600 last year!" (At this point, tladd and I are howling with laughter and writhing in shame, respectively.) To which Marge rebukingly replies, "Don't make fun of grad students; they just made a terrible life choice!" Yup. That's me. The one who made the terrible life choice. You may all proceed to make fun of me now. | | Sunday, July 24th, 2005 | | 5:46 pm |

Bad Ideas in the Kitchen
So, I'm biking home from work and stop at the market, as I often do, to pick up things for dinner. tladd had requested lamb, so I grabbed some marinated lamb kabobs. Pondered what might go well with lamb, and decided to accompany with roasted potatoes and veggie skewers. So I grabbed some zucchini, onions, mushrooms, and figs (for the Mediterranean flair), reminding myself not to forget to buy a package of wooden skewers as well. Wandered off in search of mint jelly, since you can't have lamb without mint jelly. And then found myself aimlessly walking up and down aisles, thinking there was something else I wanted to get, but not remembering what it could be. Finally decided it was ice cream, so I tossed a pint of Godiva's Chocolate Raspberry Truffle into my basket (my latest addiction), and headed out. ( Read more... ) |
